This girl has severe scoliosis. Hawi’s mother says, “Hawi is a lovely girl. She knows how hard it is for us to pay for her doctors and she is always trying to help us around the house—she helps me clean and she helps me cook.” Hawi is full of ambition. When I asked her what she wanted to be when she grows up, she told me: a doctor, a pilot, and a runner. Hawi’s name means “wish” in Amharic.
