JDC Spine Program:

Founded in 2006 by Dr. Rick Hodes, the Medical Director of JDC in Ethiopia, the JDC Spine Program is dedicated to addressing spinal deformities, with a particular focus on the young, economically disadvantaged, and vulnerable populations. The primary goal is to enhance spinal health, prevent disabilities, and provide comprehensive care for patients. From initial history-taking and examinations to rehabilitation, the program is committed to assisting spinal deformity patients at every stage. JDC is dedicated to making high-quality surgical and medical treatments accessible to the most underprivileged and vulnerable youth and adults who seek assistance from its clinic, representing various regions across Ethiopia.

Medical and Surgical Services

The program offers clinical services five days a week and recommends candidates for complex spine surgery, either abroad or by visiting surgeons within the country.

Outreach campaigns

The medical team travels to to remote regions of Ethiopia to screen individuals with spine deformities, raise awareness, and provide training to health professionals.

Capacity Building

The program offers short term, and fellowship spine trainings in Ganga hospital in Coimbatore, India, as well as online eccElearning programs.


National Spine Center in Ethiopia.

The Ethiopian Ministry of Health designated an empty building on the grounds of St. Paul’s Hospital to be The National Spine Center. The building is structurally sound, but needs significant renovation to create clinic space, operating rooms, and physical therapy facilities.
