300 Lives Changed — And 30 More Patients Still Waiting
We wanted to share a meaningful update from our ongoing spine surgery mission in Ethiopia led by Dr. Ted Belanger and his dedicated volunteer team.
Bayush, the 11 year old student we recently introduced to you, had successful, life-saving surgery on May 18, 2026. In her short life she survived treatment for a complex case of tuberculosis of her spine causing a 100 decree angle in her back, then hazardous corrective surgery, which entailed removing several vertebrae (VCR). We are delighted to share that she had a smooth post-operative course, and is now healing at home, surrounded by the love and support of her family.
We are also honored to celebrate an important milestone during this mission.
Shimelis, a 21-year old student from Adama, became patient #300! Dr. Ted Belanger and his team have come to Ethiopia annually since 2010 to operate on Ethiopian youths with severe spinal deformities. And Shimelis is his 300th patient, for which we celebrated with a great cake.
For years, Shimelis lived with a deformity that affected him both physically and emotionally. After four years of waiting, he finally received the surgery he had been waiting for. He now looks forward to living with greater confidence, getting married and pursuing his dream of becoming a businessman.
Because of your support, patients like Bayush and Shimelis are receiving hope, healing, and a second chance at life.
So far during this mission, 15 patients have successfully received surgery. However, 30 more patients are still waiting today for the care they urgently need.
Please consider donating to help us operate on these patients still waiting for life-changing surgery.
